We’re Back at the Minnesota State Fair!

The Minnesota State Fair is a go for 2021, and we’ll be back in our booth in the Agriculture/Horticulture Building with a fascinating educational display, deals on membership and lots of fun garden-themed merchandise. Here are the details you need to know:

COVID Precautions

First, let’s address the elephant in the grandstand. The pandemic continues, and MSHS will be making several Covid-19 related adjustments and accommodations. All of our staff and volunteers will be vaccinated and they will be wearing masks when working at our booth. We will be doing all transactions using credit cards rather than cash. Because we know not everyone will be able to go to the fair this year, we will be offering all of our membership discounts and state fair merchandise on our website during the fair. So, you can still get a cute T-shirt or tote bag from home.

This cute market bag will be given to everyone who joins at the Society level.

The state fair is a time many hort society members renew their membership. All new or renewing Society level members (our most popular option) will receive a market tote bag.

We also are offering a new digital membership option that is perfect for new gardeners! The digital membership includes a seasonal (four-times per year), digital newsletter filled with selected articles from Northern Gardener magazine, plus additional practical how-to and why-to information. Digital members get a 15 percent discount on MSHS merchandise, member discounts on classes and will be invited to a special event just for those who join this pilot program. The normal price for this membership is $30 but we will be offering it for $20 during the fair. On the first day of the fair (Aug. 26), the digital membership is only $15!

Learn about Pollinators and Native Plants

Our educational display this year is all about pollinators and the native plants they need. It will be a great place to take children and to learn more about how you can welcome pollinators into your garden. The display will include examples of bee nests from the University of Minnesota Bee Lab, lists of plants that are especially attractive to pollinators, tips on pollinator-friendly garden care and design as well as a photo opportunity. You can find which of Minnesota’s bees is your spirit bee! You can also cast your vote for a Minnesota Pollinator Plant of 2022.

Long Thyme, No See

As always, we’ll have high-quality, garden-themed T-shirts, tote bags and stickers to purchase. The winning T-shirt slogan from our contest earlier this summer was “Long Thyme, No See” and we’ll have plenty of that one plus others in tank, long-sleeve and short-sleeve options. Of course, we’ll have gardening gloves, visors, tools and garden-themed stickers.

The Potted Plant Show will be back at the fair in 2021.

Potted Plant Show

The MSHS Potted Plant Show is back during the first two days of the fair (Aug. 26-27) in the horticulture building. This is a great way to show off some of your best potted plants or just enjoy the plants other gardeners have nurtured. Entries are accepted Wednesday, Aug.25, with judging done that evening. If you are interested in entering the show, it’s not too late!

The Dirt Stage

The MSHS booth is in the DIRT wing of the horticulture building and we arrange for many excellent garden speakers on the Dirt stage. If you need to sit and rest awhile and hear some interesting garden information, stop by the stage any time!

We hope to see you at the fair! But, if you can’t make it, check out our webinars or merchandise from the comfort of home.
