What's Blooming in September?

The Minnesota State Fair is over, the kids are back in school and the sun is setting way too early. Despite the signs, we’re not ready for fall, and fortunately, there are plenty of plants offering color in the garden. So, what’s blooming this first week of September?
Three plants that we’ve seen a lot of are turtlehead (Chelone) — one of the best plants for pink or white in late summer; black-eyed Susans, which look wonderful for weeks on end; and some of the old-reliable annuals, like zinnias.
