Settle in with the Northern Gardener Winter Issue

It’s time to button up the garden and watch the forecast for snow. It’s also a good time to curl up with the Northern Gardener Winter issue, which should be in subscriber homes early next month and on newsstands by Nov. 8.

This issue is packed with so much information that you’ll be reading until almost January. Start by savoring profiles of five delightful, but very different gardens and their gardeners.

  • John Larsen’s formal urban garden in Minneapolis involves precise plantings and meticulous care. Plus, he offers on-point advice for hosting events in your garden.
  • In Roseville, Stephanie Rossow stops traffic with her spring displays of tulips and summer garden bursting with bloom.
  • In Alexandria, Minn., Wayne Johnson and wife, Bonnie Beresford, fill their large lot with unusual trees and dazzling daylilies. Wayne advises gardeners to seek out diversity in their tree choices. To see Wayne’s 40-plus favorite daylilies, check out a new blog post (coming soon).
  • You’ll also meet Zongxee Lee, whose greenhouse and farm grows healing herbs from the Hmong tradition. Her work has inspired the University of Minnesota to research why it is these herbs work so well.
  • Finally, side-by-side yards along busy Snelling Avenue burst with pollinator plants, the work of three neighbors who love to garden.

You’ll be inspired by each of these gardeners and ready to try some of their techniques in your garden. The issue also includes practical tips you can use, including strategies for managing those nasty houseplant pests, ways to cure cabin fever this winter, how to create a tropical paradise in your backyard and how to set up a gravel garden.

Of course, the Northern Gardener Winter issue has all our usual features too, including the seasonal calendar, MSHS class offerings, Ask the Expert and more.

Enjoy the issue! And, remember the next issue of Northern Gardener will be digital. Look for it in your email just after the holidays.

Hello! My name is Brandon and I am emailing on behalf of my grandfather, Dr. Dale Herman, formerly a professor of horticulture at North Dakota State University. He was wondering if he could get contact information for the Wayne Johnson who was interviewed in the Winter 2023 edition. He wanted to either call or write to him in order to ask some questions about the trees mentioned in the publication. He appreciates any information you can provide. Thanks!
