Thirsty Squirrels?

Here’s a fun fact we heard way back in February, but is worth remembering now.

When squirrels ravage your vegetable garden taking one bite out of a melon here and a squash there, they may not be hungry (or just plain vindictive). They are thirsty, according to Dina Kountoupes of Harvest Moon Edible Landscapes. Consider placing a low dish of water near your garden (but not in it) to give the squirrels (and the birds!) something to drink.

Let us know if this works.

This is what I suspected. When I went to harvest my Carmen peppers last year, there was a bite taken out of every single one of several dozen peppers.
Because we have dogs, I don’t want to put a dish of water on the ground for squirrels because the dogs will also drink out of it.
I’m thinking of getting glass and metal water bottles similar to what my sister had in her gerbil’s cage growing up. That way, I can mount it up higher on a fence post to keep it away from the dogs. From what I’ve seen of squirrels, I think they are smart enough to figure out they could get water there. If you have any thoughts about this, I’d hear them.
    Thank you
