Check Out the New Northern Gardener Digital Edition

Northern Gardener has moved even further digital age! In addition to this blog and the helpful MSHS website, Northern Gardener magazine is now available in a digital edition. From now through June, the digital edition will be open to anyone who wanders over its website. After June, access to the digital edition will be restricted to those with a sign on — generally members and subscribers.

northern gardener coverThe March/April issue is now online. (It’s also on newsstands and in many garden centers.) You’ll recognize it by this gorgeous cover, featuring ‘Raspberry Glow’ magnolias in bloom. That photo goes with an article on new and reliable magnolia varieties for the North by Dennis Ledvina, a noted magnolia breeder from Green Bay, Wis. Elsewhere in the issue, you’ll find ideas for eight container combinations featuring edibles and flowers, a story on how to turn your yard into a wildlife habitat, with photos from several lovely gardens that are also habitats, and the results of the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener vegetable trials from last summer. Debbie Lonnee, author and horticulturist with Bailey Nurseries Inc., offers her picks for the best of the new annuals for 2013 and Meleah Maynard selects some of the best new perennials. Just to touch all the bases, Don Engebretson covers some of the better tree and shrub cultivars of the past few years. That’s just a few of the highlights.

It’s a great issue and whether you get it in print or online, we hope you enjoy it!

Seemingly Magnolia Raspberry Glow is no longer available from sources; as, Song Sparrow Nursery. Does anyone know of other offerings of this Dennis Ledvina hybrid?

I’m not sure. Dennis Ledvina died in 2015. Your best bet is to try a local nursery that has a large selection of trees and shrubs. They may be able to seek one out for you.
