School gardens offer a great opportunity to engage students in active learning. Gardening can help youth understand the importance of nutrition and healthy, homegrown food. Developing curriculum that works for your students is key—here are some resources that may help tailor your lesson plans.

  • Grow It, Try It, Like It! This nutrition education kit is available to download for free. It includes seven booklets featuring fruits, vegetables and fun activities. 
  • The Great Garden Detective Adventure. In this free PDF download of an 11-lesson curriculum, students learn about fruits and vegetables through a series of investigations and fun activities. 
  • Got Veggies? Free PDF downloads in both English and Spanish feature garden-based nutrition education with the goal of getting kids to eat more fresh produce.
  • Back to the Kitchen: Healthy Cooking Series: This SNAP-Ed program consists of five sessions, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour each, and focuses on cooking nutritious and healthy meals.  
  • Cooking Matters: This organization inspires families to make healthy and affordable food choices. Though generally geared for adults, some nutrition activities are available for children, too.
