Christmas Tree Care Tips

Keep trees watered so that they last longer.

If you enjoy a fresh evergreen in your home for the holiday season, there are a few things you can do to keep your tree beautiful longer. According to the Minnesota Christmas Tree Association, several types of trees are grown here, including firs, pines and spruce trees.

Tree care basically involves preventing the tree from drying out. You do that several ways:

  • Buy a fresh tree and make a fresh cut when the tree gets home.
  • Immediately put the tree in water. If you will not be setting up the tree right away, put it in a bucket of fresh water outdoors or in the garage. When you set up your tree, be sure to put it in a stand with a reservoir for water.
  • Check the water level regularly. Trees can consume up to a gallon of water in the first 24 hours after they are set up. Check daily to make sure your tree has plenty to drink.

  • Keep the tree away from drying heat. Heat vents, fireplaces, even the lights on the tree will dry it out. So, set your tree up away from sources of drying heat. Be sure to unplug the lights when you are away from home and when you go to bed at night.

After the holidays are over, many communities will collect trees and chip the wood for use in community gardens and planting areas. You could also chip your own tree or cut the branches for use in other garden projects.

With a few simple steps, you can enjoy your tree for several weeks.
