Designing an Entry, Deck or Patio Garden
Winter is a great time to learn a new skill to use in the garden, and MSHS offers several classes for folks who want to learn more about vegetable gardening, flower judging or other fun topics. This year, MSHS is offering a special class on how to design an entry, deck or patio garden.
The course meets over four Tuesday evenings, beginning Feb.10 and ending March 3. During the course of the class you will learn all about design and complete a design for a new entry, deck or patio garden in your own landscape. The course is taught by University of Minnesota experts Julie Weisenhorn and Jim Calkins.
What You’ll Learn
This is your opportunity to learn the basic principles of landscape design and avoid the mistakes made by novices and professionals alike. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the basic principles of successful landscape design and develop a design for their own property by designing an entry garden, deck/patio garden, or other landscape space. The course fee includes a comprehensive packet of information, lab materials and a basic set of design tools.
The workshop will focus on the principles and theory of sustainable landscape design, site analysis, concept and draft design development, and plant selection. Participants will also learn how to develop quality bed lines, how to choose and mix and match plants based on function and landscape characteristics, and how to build flexibility into the design process.
The instructors will email students with additional information to help them prepare for the class ahead of time including how to collect a soil sample, completion of needs assessment and site analysis questionnaires, and other information that will be needed for the first class.
Julie Weisenhorn is a University of Minnesota Extension Educator in consumer horticulture, and Jim Calkins is a horticulturist and former landscape design instructor at the University of Minnesota.
