We know cold-climate gardening can be challenging. That's why we provide resources to help gardeners of all skill levels. Established in 1866, we're one of the country's oldest horticultural societies, offering hands-on classes, lectures, webinars, special events, membership packages, volunteer opportunities, community outreach programs, and the award-winning Northern Gardener magazine.
Roll up your sleeves and dig in! Sign up for a class, pick up a copy of Northern Gardener, become a member, support our signature programs, and grow with us.
Our Signature Programs
Our signature program provides low-income or at-risk children and families with raised-bed containers, soil, compost, vegetable and annual plants, seeds, webinars and other educational resources. Participants learn how to plant and tend a garden, grow fresh food, and use their harvest to prepare simple, healthy recipes.
Northern Gardener Magazine
This program coordinates donations of plants, seeds and gardening tools from growers, garden centers, and seed companies and redistributes them to community gardens and public green spaces. Grown and maintained by our neighbors across the state, these gardens beautify neighborhoods, provide space to grow healthy food and pollinator habitats, and serve as places members of the community gather, socialize and learn.
You may have noticed some changes at MSHS recently. Our main goal remains the same — to provide you with the best resources to help you grow as a gardener.
