Holiday Northern Gardener Available Now

If you don’t subscribe to Northern Gardener, be sure to check your local book store, garden center or Lund’s & Byerly’s store to pick up a copy of our November/December 2017 issue. This issue is filled with great garden information for the holiday season and beyond.

That beautiful cover image is from photographer Tracy Walsh, who shot a story I wrote about creating floral arrangements from your garden. Ardith Beveridge of Koehler and Dramm Institute of Floristry joined us at the garden of Jackie Cherry Flaherty in St. Paul in July. Jackie has a lush, cottage garden and Ardith found tons of beautiful blooms and foliage to use in four different and striking arrangements. These natural looking arrangements are the kind any gardener can put together with what is blooming. Next year, I plan to try to create an arrangement every week from what’s in the garden. We’ll see how I do! (For ways to create holiday arrangements that you can use at Thanksgiving or beyond, check out this blog post from previous years.)

The rest of the issue is packed with articles to enjoy throughout the holiday season. For your holiday gift planning, Julie Jensen comes up with a list of gifts that touch your senses and are sensibly priced. Laura Schwarz reviews the varieties of switch grass (Panicum virgatum) that grow well in our northern climate and provide plenty of texture to the winter landscape. Susan Davis Price talks about flower shapes and how you can use them when designing a garden. And, Nancy Leasman shows us the central Minnesota garden of Sharon Quale, where conifers provide the backbone of the garden and make winter as stunning as summer. We also announce our MSHS award winners for 2017.

It’s a terrific issue of Northern Gardener and we hope you will enjoy it.

I enjoyed Laura Schwarz’s article regarding Ash Tree replacements but what are the sources for those trees – not have much on-line success.
