SUMMARY:Create Your Own Orchard: Make Fruit Trees by Grafting
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to grow fruit trees in your own backyard and harvest home grown fruits or start a small orchard? This class will give you the skills and hands-on experience to learn how to hand make your own fruit trees\, repair damaged trees\, and add on different fruits to existing trees to save space. \nGrafting is the ancient art of how to attach a specific desired cultivar of fruit onto a rootstock to make a customized fruit tree. Students will learn the reasons for grafting\, the skills and materials needed to dormant graft\, bud graft\, and summer graft\, and how to nurture trees to maturity. Basic biology of the tree\, and why this works will also be covered. Resources also will be given that will help you find desired rootstock and scionwood for the specialty tree of your choice. If you have a favorite tree you want to replicate\, like a neighbor’s or grandparent’s apple tree\, contact Dan after you register and he’ll provide instructions for preparing tissue from that tree to graft. \nThis class is about two hours of instruction\, an hour break for lunch\, and then hands-on practice afterwards. Each student will take home two trees that they themselves have made.  \nAll are welcome – WEI classes are open to everyone. \nWe are also offering this class on Saturday\, March 21. \nInstructor Bio: Dan Sheild is the co- owner of Stone Creek Farm\, an orchard that specializes in stone fruits\, including plums\, apricots\, and peaches. With organic practices\, Dan developed a system that would allow sweet and juicy peaches to grow and fruit consistently\, as well as manage his orchard and farm for commercial fruit sales and research. Dan is a former board member for the Organic Fruit Growers Association\, has memberships in Land Stewardship Project\, Minnesota Fruit and Vegetables Growers association\, and NAFEX\, North American fruit explorers. Dan has grafted most of the 1200 trees on his property. \nRegister here: Create Your Own Orchard: Make Fruit Trees by Grafting – Women’s Environmental Institute

DESCRIPTION:Become a beekeeper in this seven-session hands-on class that meets on the third Sunday of the month while following the life of honeybees. The first class is Sunday\, April 19 and continues through October 18 unless otherwise noted. \nThis experiential class will cover the historic folklore\, agricultural politics and current sciences of sustainable beekeeping in northern climates. The seven-session class is designed for beginning beekeepers and will provide hands-on experience at each turning point of the season. Each session will focus on the changing tasks that are involved with keeping bees and will include one-on-one time with the hives\, guided by Hailey Kisch from Big Sky Acres. \nThe class meets the educational requirements for the WEI Beekeeping Certificate. To earn a WEI Certificate\, registrants must attend at least 6 of 7 classes. \nAll are welcome – WEI classes are open to everyone. \nInstructor Bio: Hailey Kisch dedicated to sustainability and food sovereignty\, with a B.S. in Soil and Water Science and an M.S. in Range Science from Montana State University. She applies this expertise on her farm outside Shafer\, where she and her husband\, Trevor\, raise their four children while focusing on sustainable farming practices. Starting with a small chicken coop and garden\, their farm now produces high-quality produce and pasture-raised animals\, all while preserving the land’s health for future generations. Education is key\, as Hailey and Trevor teach their children about soil health and resource preservation.

SUMMARY:Adding Vertical Elements to the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker – Jennifer Knutson \nJennifer is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She has been a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener since 2007. Jennifer is a member of the Minnesota Horticultural Society and North Star Lily Society. She has been writing a garden column that is published in the Brainerd Dispatch since 2008. \nAdding a Vertical Element to the Garden with Vines\nClimbing vines have a special charm that goes beyond adding vertical interest to a garden. They can have a softening effect on a fence\, add beauty to garden structures\, or act as a screen. Their lush leaves and appealing flowers decorate the landscape with color and texture. Some provide edible or ornamental fruit\, late-season decorative seed pods\, colorful fall foliage\, or fragrance. Popular perennial and annual vines will be discussed in this presentation.

SUMMARY:Rhonda Fleming Hayes Launches Garden for Life
DESCRIPTION:Don’t throw in the trowel! In Garden for Life\, Rhonda Fleming Hayes brings a lifetime of gardening experience\, research-based advice\, and collective wisdom to older gardeners who are looking for inspiration and practical strategies. This delightful comprehensive guide suggests ways to downsize or redesign an existing garden\, presents new techniques and tools to make gardening less strenuous\, and highlights plants that “multitask” to make a garden more sustainable—for both the gardener and the environment. It also advises on how and when to ask for help to lighten the load so we can focus on the life-enhancing aspects of time in the garden. \nGarden for Life reminds us of the many proven health benefits of gardening. Gardening is a simple way to answer the human need to connect with nature\, a craving called biophilia. It offers a low-intensity workout with a variety of natural movement\, provides a sense of purpose while nurturing a meditative state that decreases stress\, fosters improved nutrition and better brain health\, and grows social connection and community. In short\, gardening is excellent for health and longevity! \nRhonda Fleming Hayes is the author of Garden for Life: Strategies for Easier \, Greener\, More Joyful Gardening as We Age and Pollinator Friendly Gardening: Gardening for Bees\, Butterflies and Other Pollinators. \nRhonda is an award-winning writer and photographer applying her passion to all things plant related. Combining a lifetime of gardening experience with wit and solid research-based advice\, her stories can be found in the Minnesota Star Tribune\, Northern Gardener\, and Mpls/StPaul Magazine. She has also been published in Southern Living\, Midwest Living\, Savannah Magazine\, and numerous online sites. \nShe’s a popular speaker for garden clubs and other groups with presentations covering pollinators\, butterfly gardening\, native plants\, and the art of kitchen gardening to name a few. \nRhonda is a native Californian with Southern roots living in Minnesota. Nowadays she and her husband spend winters in New Orleans where she delights in growing her own lemons. Following his nomadic career she has also lived and gardened in Tennessee\, Kansas (twice)\, Illinois (twice)\, Iowa and even England. Regardless of location she has learned to bloom where she’s planted. \nRhonda gardens in Minneapolis in an urban neighborhood surrounded by woods and water. The abundant plot is home to many bees\, butterflies\, birds and beneficial insects. She loves to share the fruits (and veggies) of her garden with friends\, family and wildlife. \nShe has volunteered as an Extension Master Gardener since 2000. She is a member of GardenComm\, Minnesota Horticultural Society\, Herb Society of America\, and a past trustee of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. \nAbout Events at M&Q: \nThese are guidelines only\, and if you have questions about the most up to date information\, you can always call us at 612-822-4611. \nQ: Do I need to register? \nA: Please do if at all possible! Use the registration button above.
