SUMMARY:Art: Toward the Trees
DESCRIPTION:Walk toward the trees! Take in Mary Pat Maracle’s textured photo encaustics of detailed broadleaves and Kristen Palm’s vivid\, representational abstract trees and landscapes. Step back to experience Palm’s bold colors and shapes that evoke our tall sylvan relatives in acrylic\, then step closer to observe the blankets of palpable wax\, layered intricately by Maracle. Though both artists depict trees in different ways – sometimes playful and loud\, other times ghostly with an underlying structure of branches and twigs – each style of work celebrates their own connection to the trees that surround us. And visit the website to reserve your admission.

SUMMARY:A Year in the Life of Honeybees: Beekeeping Certification Course
DESCRIPTION:Become a beekeeper in this seven-session hands-on class that meets on the third Sunday of the month while following the life of honeybees. The first class is Sunday\, April 19 and continues through October 18 unless otherwise noted. \nThis experiential class will cover the historic folklore\, agricultural politics and current sciences of sustainable beekeeping in northern climates. The seven-session class is designed for beginning beekeepers and will provide hands-on experience at each turning point of the season. Each session will focus on the changing tasks that are involved with keeping bees and will include one-on-one time with the hives\, guided by Hailey Kisch from Big Sky Acres. \nThe class meets the educational requirements for the WEI Beekeeping Certificate. To earn a WEI Certificate\, registrants must attend at least 6 of 7 classes. \nAll are welcome – WEI classes are open to everyone. \nInstructor Bio: Hailey Kisch dedicated to sustainability and food sovereignty\, with a B.S. in Soil and Water Science and an M.S. in Range Science from Montana State University. She applies this expertise on her farm outside Shafer\, where she and her husband\, Trevor\, raise their four children while focusing on sustainable farming practices. Starting with a small chicken coop and garden\, their farm now produces high-quality produce and pasture-raised animals\, all while preserving the land’s health for future generations. Education is key\, as Hailey and Trevor teach their children about soil health and resource preservation.

SUMMARY:Art: Viewpoint
DESCRIPTION:“Viewpoint” brings together the distinct artistic lenses of Brian Jensen and Mary Meuwissen to explore how we perceive our surroundings. Jensen offers a viewpoint rooted in clarity and memory—his precision-based acrylics on wood capture the iconic beauty of Minnesota’s landscapes and lakes with a storyteller’s eye. In contrast\, Meuwissen offers a viewpoint from within. Her abstract\, luminous layers of oil and wax paintings strip away the literal to reveal the emotional essence of a place. When looking at her pieces\, you witness the joyful shifting of energy in nature.  Please visit the website for ticketing details.

SUMMARY:Book Event: On An Inland Sea
DESCRIPTION:“As a man who long convinced himself that he lived on the edge of the world\, here’s my wish for you: Embrace the awe. Allow yourself to feel alone. Then remember you are not.” \nJoin us May 27th at Subtext Books to celebrate the release of On An Inland Sea: Writing the Great Lakes and its Minnesotan contributors\,  Martha Lundin\, Staci Drouillard\, Sheila Packa\, and Aaron Brown. The event starts at 7 PM\, authors will be reading sections from their work in On An Inland Sea. \nThe thirty-three writers in this collection grapple with the vastness of the lakes—and the vastness of experience living alongside them. Gabriel Bump explores how his relationship with Lake Michigan changed after losing a friend. For another writer\, the water provided the freedom to explore a romance that would have been too complicated on land. Come dive for shipwrecks\, harvest manoomin\, and visit the disappearing ice caves. Witness the chickadees\, smelt\, and cattails\, but also zebra mussels\, factory runoff\, and algae. Each writer’s relationship with the lakes is personal and unique\, but that relationship to the water is also one shared by so many of us.

SUMMARY:Garden Club of Minneapolis hosts a Tour of the Normandale Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join the Garden Club of Minneapolis for an enjoyable tour of the Normandale Japanese Garden with Cece Cope\, Japanese Garden Lead Volunteer.  This Japanese strolling garden  is over-flowing with Japanese garden elements:  a gated entrance\, multiple bridges\, stone lanterns\, shelters\, symbolic islands\, rocks\, streams and waterfalls. Plant materials\, though mostly not those used in Japan due to climate differences\, reflect the reserved use of flowering plants that is traditional in Japan. Variations in tones and textures of green predominate and woody plant materials are trimmed or pruned to specific aesthetic goals. \nFree and open to the public.  Please park in the west lot  and meet at the front entrance of the garden at 3:30 pm. \nFor more information\, go to https://gardenclubmpls.org/calendar/events/

SUMMARY:Art: Radiant Flow
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together three distinct voices\, “Radiant Flow” celebrates the movement between nature\, tradition\, and modern expression. This exhibition explores how light and energy transition across different surfaces. Patty MacHalec’s plein-air style multimedia canvases display a classic depth. The organic\, three-dimensional curves of Kristen Treuting’s gourds are stained with ornamental motifs. Jane Johnson’s contemporary paintings vibrantly capture the fluid\, ever-changing nature of the world around us. Together\, these artists invite you to witness the “flow” that connects the tactile world with the human spirit. Please visit the website for ticketing details.
