SUMMARY:Art: Toward the Trees
DESCRIPTION:Walk toward the trees! Take in Mary Pat Maracle’s textured photo encaustics of detailed broadleaves and Kristen Palm’s vivid\, representational abstract trees and landscapes. Step back to experience Palm’s bold colors and shapes that evoke our tall sylvan relatives in acrylic\, then step closer to observe the blankets of palpable wax\, layered intricately by Maracle. Though both artists depict trees in different ways – sometimes playful and loud\, other times ghostly with an underlying structure of branches and twigs – each style of work celebrates their own connection to the trees that surround us. And visit the website to reserve your admission.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Spring with Rhonda Fleming Hayes
DESCRIPTION:Join us May 7th at 7 PM at the University Club of Saint Paul (420 Summit Ave\, St. Paul) for an event with award-winning writer and photographer Rhonda Fleming Hayes for her recent release\, Garden for Life Strategies for Easier\, Greener\, More Joyful Gardening as We Age. \nIn Garden for Life\, Rhonda Fleming Hayes brings a lifetime of gardening experience\, research-based advice\, and collective wisdom to older gardeners who are looking for inspiration and practical strategies. This delightful comprehensive guide presents new techniques and tools to make gardening less strenuous\, and highlights plants that “multitask” to make a garden more sustainable—for both the gardener and the environment. It also advises on how and when to ask for help to lighten the load so we can focus on the life-enhancing aspects of spending time in the garden. \nGarden for Life reminds us that gardening is a simple way to answer the human need to connect with nature\, a craving called biophilia\, while highlighting its many proven health benefits. Gardening offers a low-intensity workout with a variety of natural movements\, provides a sense of purpose while nurturing a meditative state that decreases stress\, fosters improved nutrition and better brain health\, and grows social connection and community. In short\, gardening is excellent for health and longevity! \n“I love the message of Garden for Life because it’s not about doing less and giving up what we love. It’s about gardening smarter.”—Joe Lamp’l \nThis event is free. The University Clubs bar and restaurant will be open before and during the event.

SUMMARY:Heather Holm presents Oaks\, Fire\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Natural landscapes in the US and Canada have been drastically altered by human activities such as infrastructure development\, logging\, overgrazing\, the introduction of invasive species\, and fire suppression.  \nWith the current threat of climate change\, it is crucial to understand the past and present ecological conditions of these landscapes to inform future restoration efforts. \nThe presentation will examine the past to understand grassland systems at the time of Euro-American settlement and discuss how Native Americans managed and influenced their composition through regular use of fire. \nHeather will address today’s ecological conditions\, focusing on oak ecosystems and grasslands\, then paint a picture of what a functional\, biodiverse\, and resilient landscape may look like in the future and what actions are needed to achieve these outcomes. \nFollow Heather online: \nFacebook: PollinatorsNativePlants \nInstagram: beesnativeplants \nYouTube: @NativeBeesWasps \nPhotography Website: www.pollinatorphotos.com \niNaturalist: https://www.inaturalist.org/people/723565 \nHeather Holm is a pollinator conservationist and award-winning author of four books: Pollinators of Native Plants (2014)\, Bees (2017)\, Wasps (2021)\, and Common Native Bees of the Eastern United States (2022). Both Bees and Wasps have won multiple book awards\, including the American Horticultural Society Book Award (2018 and 2022\, respectively). She is the founder and chair of Minnesota Native Bees\, an online field guide illustrating the native bees of Minnesota and beyond. \nIf you attend in person\, social time is 6:45-7pm\, and you’re welcome to bring any of Heather’s books you own for her to sign after the presentation. \nIf you attend via Zoom\, the link will be provided on our website closer to the event.

SUMMARY:Grow Your Own Mushrooms Outdoors
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: In this hands-on workshop\, Stig will show you how to grow mushrooms outdoors using low tech methods like logs\, patches\, and bags. Thinking about expanding your food cultivation skills? Or are you simply curious about mushrooms? Either way\, this workshop is for you! You’ll get the chance to make your own shiitake or oyster mushroom log to take home\, while learning from local farmer-cultivators about how to select\, cultivate\, and harvest mushrooms outdoors. Plus\, we’ll have delicious mushroom-themed snacks and drinks to keep you fueled throughout the day. \nThis is a great opportunity to connect with fellow mushroom enthusiasts and dive into a fun\, interactive experience. \nAll are welcome. WEI classes are open to everyone. \nInstructor Bio: Stig Mycelia is a self taught cultivator and lifelong student of fungi. It is his mission in life to cultivate a relationship with any and every fungi he comes across while maintaining a low tech approach that is hands on and personal to develop accessible approaches to working with otherwise “difficult” fungi. He is an educator and advocate for the fungi often overlooked\, having direct experience in the cultivation of several distinct species across multiple genera and many localities and lineages from across the globe. His approach and philosophy of life is one rooted in nature and the natural world\, of connection and relationships\, and to the pursuit of happiness. \nAssisting Instructor Bio: From Tony Cineus: “My journey into the world of mushrooms began at a young age\, deeply rooted in the rich cultural traditions of my Haitian and Mexican heritage. From childhood\, mushrooms were not just a culinary ingredient but an integral part of our lives.” After working with a mentor who guided Tony in mushroom cultivation and instilled in them the importance of sustainable practices\, Tony vowed to share expertise in mushrooms and empower others to cultivate their own mushrooms and foster a community of self-sufficiency and holistic living. \nMake a day of it! On the way to WEI\, visit charming Lindstrom\, MN\, for Northwoods Roasterie coffee and a pastry from the Lindstrom Bakery. After class\, visit Wild River State Park (only 10 minutes from WEI). Franconia Sculpture Park is also nearby and open ’til 8pm daily. \nIf you would be interested in staying overnight at WEI before and/or after this class\, please reserve accommodations through our FarmStay. \nWEI has an annual scholarship fund to support cost-accessible programming. SUMMARY:Art: Viewpoint
DESCRIPTION:“Viewpoint” brings together the distinct artistic lenses of Brian Jensen and Mary Meuwissen to explore how we perceive our surroundings. Jensen offers a viewpoint rooted in clarity and memory—his precision-based acrylics on wood capture the iconic beauty of Minnesota’s landscapes and lakes with a storyteller’s eye. In contrast\, Meuwissen offers a viewpoint from within. Her abstract\, luminous layers of oil and wax paintings strip away the literal to reveal the emotional essence of a place. When looking at her pieces\, you witness the joyful shifting of energy in nature.  Please visit the website for ticketing details.
