...is to grow cold-climate gardeners through education, encouragement and community.
WE STRIVE TO:
- Educate. We help our members, program participants and the general public learn how to grow plants in our challenging northern climate and positively impact the environment.
- Encourage gardening. We aim to help grow gardeners by sharing resources, tools and inspiration through our website, webinars, class offerings and Northern Gardener magazine.
- Cultivate community. Through ongoing educational and community outreach programs, we share plants, seeds, tools and education with gardeners growing their own food and beautifying their neighborhoods.
The only magazine exclusively about gardening in USDA Hardiness Zones 3, 4 and 5, Northern Gardener is written for and by people who garden here. Each issue is filled with timely columns and feature articles covering all areas of gardening for all skill levels. This award-winning publication, which includes a digital edition, is one of the many benefits of being a member.
We offer a wide variety of educational opportunities for members (who receive free or discounted access) and anyone else who wants to learn about gardening and plants. Join us for one of our many classes, webinars, hands-on workshops and garden tours!
Our hallmark program provides raised garden beds, soil, compost, vegetables, annual plants, seeds and educational resources for organizations serving underserved children and families.
We coordinate donations of plants, seeds and gardening tools from growers, garden centers and seed companies and redistribute them to community and public gardens. Grown and maintained by community members, these gardens beautify neighborhoods, provide space to grow healthy food and serve as public places where community members can gather, socialize and grow together.
