Proven Winners

Proven Winners Lemon Slice

What is totally unique about Proven Winners Lemon Slice is the yellow and white pinwheel color pattern that has never been seen before in Calibrachoa.
It has a mounding habit with the same superior Superbells performance and disease resistance you rely on from Proven Winners. Lemon Slice will reach 6-12" in height with a 12-24" width. A great choice for a patio container or window box, on its own or in combination with other colorful annuals.

Is Your Compost Safe?

Compost - Grass Clippings

Or will it damage your landscape?

Many communities, golf courses and residential lawns were treated with Imprelis herbicide in spring of 2011. Unfortunately, the herbicide kills and damages both needle bearing and leaf bearing trees. It was removed from use by the EPA in 2011, but due to its persistence in the soil and affected plant tissue, it continues to be a problem in treated landscapes where the materials are recycled in lawn clippings as well as when treated materials are composted.

Fundraising
Upcoming Garden Gathering 2013
The MSHS Garden Gathering for donors at the $200 level and above is coming this June!
Thank you to everyone who has joined our honor roll of donors so far this year.  In part because of your support, Garden-in-a-Box is growing and will be at work in schools in Minnesota; and Minnesota Green celebrates 25 years of promoting community greening to strengthen neighborhoods through activities that connect people and plants.

Increased funding from foundations - including a $30,000 grant for Garden-in-a-Box from General Mills - and a successful spring fundraising event help support our educational programs, but those funds mostly cover direct costs. We continue to need donations above membership and subscription dues from individuals like you to help MSHS staff bring our programs to the gardening community. Our spring appeal letter arrives in mailboxes this month, or you may make your gift online. Thank you for your support.

Malmborg's Garden Centers
Why buy plants that are grown locally? Locally-grown plants are better adapted to local growing conditions, they are delivered fresh to the garden centers, and the growers that produced them are available with knowledge about the plants.

Malmborg's is proud to grow all of our annuals, vegetables, and herbs at our 7 acre greenhouses in Rogers, MN and at our greenhouses in Brooklyn Center, MN. Look for the Minnesota shaped tag and Vertical Farmer patio vegetables at all Twin Cities Malmborg's Garden Centers.

Garden Design: 7 Ways to Inspire Emotion
(from Notes from Northern Gardener Blog on April 19, 2013)

Plant Cave
When you want to get away from it all, you can crawl into this cave of greenery.
I blogged earlier this week about Julie Moir Messervy and her concept of the "big move" in garden design. During her talk at the Carver-Scott Master Gardeners' Garden Fever Day, Messervy discussed another important concept in garden design - form. [...]

Here are the seven archetypes Messervy identifies and an example from the home or garden. She calls these "forms we all love." Continue reading>>
